The Round Table – Jeff Madsen Loses his Monkey
February 16, 2009
After storming the poker scene in 2006, winning 2 bracelets and the coveted Player of the
Year title at the World Series of Poker, Jeff Madsen made everyone stop and stare. Just 21 at the time he accomplished more in that one month span than a lot of players have in their whole poker career. Since then, though, he has found another win to be elusive. Consistently going deep, but Madsen still didn’t have that next win. On February 14th, that all changed for him. He took down the $1500 NLHE event at the Los Angeles Poker Classic, became $100,000 richer and finally got what he likes to call ‘the monkey off my back.’
KL: How many events at the LAPC have you played?
Jeff: This was my 5th event.
KL: How had the others gone?
Jeff: Well, I kept going deep. I was playing very well, I knew I was, but I can tend to give away chips when I get a lot or when I get bored and want to make a play. Sometimes, though, you realize that plays aren’t so necessary if the cards are falling decent. It’s just solid poker, and then at the final table start to pick it up a bit. So this one I just didn’t do anything too stupid. I maybe played one hand bad the whole tourney, I felt. I got good cards and my reads were on, so it was inevitable I was going to go deep. I feel like I could’ve cashed twice already. It’s just easier to play comfortably when you get chips early and ride them through the tourney.
KL: So you slowed down from the start at this one and let the chips come to you?
Jeff: It was just less unnecessary plays. I was still 3 betting and bluffing a good amount, but more based on strategy and less about boredom.
KL: What made this so clear to you all the sudden?
Jeff: It wasn’t all of a sudden, in poker you know what you’re doing but it doesn’t mean that realization always makes you do what’s right all the time.
KL: What was a crucial play for you in this event?
Jeff: I just played really well got above average cards all tournament. There was a point where I four-bet pre-flop four hands in a row! I had A-K, Q-Q, T-T, A-Q, so the chips were gravitating towards me. I won all those except the last one.
KL: How was it with fellow Full Tilt pro John Phan at the final table?
Jeff: Well, it was interesting; we had a last longer bet. He gave me 2-1 odds.
KL: Does that ever make any difference on your play?
Jeff: No, not at all. You shouldn’t make a bet if it will affect your play. But anyways, he gave away a lot of chips and busted in ninth place.
KL: Who was your toughest opponent throughout the event?
Jeff: It was a tough tourney but I didn’t face a whole lot of adversity. Once I got chips I held on to them and just chipped up.
KL: So you were set at final table? No swings?
Jeff: Not really, I was chip leader whole way. I mean there was a little up and down but no big swings down.
KL: How was it once you got heads up?
Jeff: It was easy. He wasn’t an online pro or a top player so I won it pretty handily. The last hand he called off a lot of chips with A-2 preflop pretty instantly, so it was kind of over before it started.
KL: Tell us how the last hand played out.
Jeff: I had like 1.3 million maybe and he had maybe 450,000. I raise the button with 10-10 to like 23k. He makes it 70k and I say all in and he calls instantly. My tens held up and I won.
KL: So you have mentioned having the monkey off your back with this win.
Jeff: It’s just always good to get that next win after a good intro into poker. It’s a good confidence builder.
KL: Do you think the years in between a win have affected your play or does that not bother you in that way?
Jeff: I think everything affects your play in some way, so yes.
KL: How will things change now?
Jeff: Every day is different. Hopefully I keep playing good.
KL: How did you celebrate your win?
Jeff: I took 151 shots with my friends. I am going to celebrate for real in a few days.
KL: What do you have coming up next?
Jeff: I am playing the 10k horse tomorrow and I want to win that. I’m just going to be playing every live tournament I can.
Like a wheel, the Round Table is a circle of adventures and victories, beats and stories, and life as it unfolds with a cast of characters that may, or may not, have joined you in your home on a local TV program. There's so much more to poker than what you see on TV. Although I won't use canvas, I will paint the full picture for you as I follow the lives of some of your favorite (and some unknown) players. The Round Table is an ongoing series of life, viewed full circle.

Seed, Feldman come close at FTOPS XI
February 16, 2009
You could blame it on the growing popularity of the Full Tilt Online Poker series and the immense fields but the professional poker players have essentially been shut out at FTOPS XI.
Former World Champion Huck Seed and WSOPC winner Peter Feldman nearly changed that on Friday. Seed just missed out on the final table of FTOPS XI event 20 No-Limit Hold’em 6/Max by coming in 11th while Feldman came in 9th at FTOPS Event 21 Razz.
Both Full Tilt Pros made several thousand for their efforts but you can be sure they were gunning for first place.
Meanwhile on Saturday Chris “Moorman1″ Moorman came in 8th place in Event 23 Pot-Limit Omaha. Moorman has been killing it at MTTs lately and would have to be considered one of the most fearsome online tournament players in the world.
Also starting on Saturday was the epic two-day Event 22 No-Limit Hold’em. The event had a substantial $5,000+$200 buy-in and, at the time this article was published, there were 12 players left with Adam “Roothlus” Levy third in chips.
Of course the one everyone has been waiting for – the $500+$35 FTOPS XI main event will kick off at 6 p.m. ET today with recent WSOPE champion John Juanda handling the hosting duties. The event carries a $2.5 million guarantee and should bring out more than $5,000 players in hopes of winning it all.

No Antonius? LarsLuzak will have to do
February 15, 2009

A friend of Finland?Finnish online player Sami “LarsLuzak” Kelopuro is doing a great job of keeping Tom “durrrr” Dwan busy until Patrik Antonius is finally able to begin the “durrrr Challenge.”
Although there were rumors the challenge would begin on Thursday, Antonius has since mentioned that his internet (he is currently in Thailand) is intermittent at best.
Meanwhile Kelopuro and Dwan have been playing a ton of hands versus each other in the early stages of 2009.
Although Dwan has had the edge in Hold’em the most recent session saw Kelopuro come out slightly ahead (Kelopuro was rumored to be way ahead in Pot-Limit Omaha although not necessary against durrrr).

In the biggest hand of the night Kelopuro was dealt A Q on the button while Dwan received K 5. Dwan was relentless in his bluffing but Kelopuro (who was aided by a lucky river card) ended up making a good call in the end to rake a +$100,000 pot.
Check out exactly how the action went down in the PokerListings hand-replayer below.
In other high stakes news Phil Ivey continues to rack up the losses in 2009 with nearly $600,000 gone in just No-Limit Hold’em. It’s rumored that Ivey is down closer to $2.5 million when you include Pot-Limit Omaha.
Ivey can take comfort in the fact that several other world-class players including David “MR B 2 U SON” Benyamine, Brian Hastings and Dwan have all experienced miserable downswings in 2009.

PokerStars steps in, saves FleetStreetGames
February 15, 2009
For awhile it looked like the thousands of poker players on www.fleetstreetgames.com would be kicked to the virtual street after the site closed down but PokerStars has decided to forge a deal with FleetStreet letting all their players transfer their balances to PokerStars’ online poker site.
Fleet Street Games started just last February and had a unique format, which offered subscribers from all over the world the chance to enter numerous poker tournaments each for just one fixed monthly fee.
Unfortunately the site was particularly hard hit by the economic downturn and Fleet Street Games was unable to raise its second round of funding.

PokerStars, on the hand, is the world’s largest online poker room (with 19 million players word-wide). Its tournament selection and sheer volume of games is virtually unmatched.
Dan Goldman, President and CEO of Fleet Street Games, told outgoing FSG players they will have a solid home at PokerStars.
“Many FSG players will, I am sure, already be familiar with PokerStars,” he said. It is, as I know from long personal experience, the best all-round online poker site in the world and although we are extremely disappointed we couldn’t make a go of FSG in the present economic climate, we are thrilled that we have been able to secure such a great new home for our players.”

Kentucky wants longer brief for appeal
February 13, 2009
The online gambling domain case continues as lawyers for the Commonwealth of Kentucky are asking to submit a much longer appeal brief than is allowed by rule.
The motion asks for an additional 30 pages added to the standard 50 pages allowed in its appeal of the Kentucky Court of Appeals ruling that the seizure order issued by Judge Thomas Wingate against gambling sites’ domain names should be set aside.
Kentucky is now taking the case to the State Supreme Court, and the state’s lawyers believe they need additional pages to state their case in the appeal as well as an extra 10 days beyond the filing deadline for their brief.
“They’re certainly within their rights to make their request, but they don’t really seem to be bringing anything new to the table,” said Joe Brennan Jr., iMEGA’s chairman.
Brennan said the motion will be a repetition of the same arguments that failed in the Court of Appeals. Kentucky had argued that iMEGA is an illegal gambling association and had no right to represent its members in court, and that domain names are “gambling devices” according to Kentucky law.
“Those arguments didn’t work before, but maybe they feel the added volume of pages will overcome the flaws found by the Court of appeals in their attack on our members,” Brennan said.
Brennan also suggested Kentucky’s attorneys might save space in their brief if they dropped the assault on iMEGA’s standing.
“Perhaps they might review Hunt v. Washington State Apple Advertising Commission, where the U.S. Supremem Court establish the right of associations to stand in court on the behalf of their members,” Brennan said. “Since that’s been a settled issue since 1977, I think it’s time for the Commonwealth’s attorneys to move on.”

durrrr-magedden! Four tables appear on Full Tilt
February 13, 2009
At long last it appears one of the most highly anticipated heads-up matches is nearly upon us.
Yesterday at approximately 4 p.m. PST four durrrr Challenge tables appeared on Full Tilt Poker, each one taking the form of $200/$400 Pot-Limit Omaha.
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last couple of months, Tom Dwan issued the “durrrr Challenge” in January which gave 3-1 odds on a $1.5 million dollar wager that he would be the overall winner heads-up against anyone over the span of 50,000 hands.
The rules were that it had to be playing four tables at the same time, minimum $200/$400 stakes and it wasn’t open to Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond.
Despite Dwan’s stature as an absolute animal at high-stakes online poker, there were those who simply couldn’t resist the odds and the challenge. Among the players rumored to have taken Dwan up on the offer were David Benyamine, Phil Ivey and Patrik Antonius.
Antonius was slated to play first and the two scheduled their games to start sometime in February. Two days ago Antonius appeared ready to play but Dwan said he was tired and the game was postponed.
Many in the online community were starting to get impatient and several members of the 2+2 poker forum even suggested it wasn’t going to happen.
The people at Full Tilt Poker obviously have a different opinion as the tables showed up in the lobby of the popular poker room last night.
The entire poker world is now waiting with bated breath as the two uber poker ballers have yet to make an appearance at their reserved tables.
PokerListings.com will be offering exclusive coverage of the epic event with complete hand histories, detailed win/loss results and a daily recap.
The only question is – will the online poker world ever be the same?
